	Midori, which means "green" in Japanese, was an impulse buy. She, and dozens like her, were scrabbling around in tiny plastic tanks in a store next to our apartment in Tokyo one summer. She caught our attention because she was the most active of the lot.
	'Dori wasn't much bigger than a 500-yen coin, or a Canadian dollar, when we got her. She was spaced out and frantic, so we took to cuddling her in a hand to keep her quiet. She liked that -- a warm, dark, cozy place, and soon was falling asleep with Yumi...
